Freshman year reflection

To start off this blog, I want to say I am grateful to my parents and the college for allowing me to go debt free to earn my degree. I really appreciate the efforts both parties put in for my education. I would rate my year a 5/10. Some times I HATED being in a predominantly Caucasian school but other times I enjoyed what the school offered. Word of advice, do not let anything hurt your future and potential. It is not worth 4 years for you to graduate with debt or be unhappy. I grew up with my college and its football culture. I knew I was going there for a while for family and financial reasons but I had hope of moving away. Because I went to the school 30 minutes away from my home I saved A LOT of money but I was restricted to my parents rules and curfew. As a commuter, you have to be aware of traffic and parking issues, so my recommendation is try to start classes at 8:30 or so. On the academic sides of things, my courses were pretty easy, nothing new since I took most intro classes in high school. Funny thing is I have taken an intro biology and chemistry 3 times but in different formats/teachers. I definitely aced those classes. I also want other students to know that they should take advantage of the honors program at their school. My honors class introduced me to very cool and intelligent people learning for a cause. I happen to take a climate change seminar and African American plays class that educated me in so many ways and taught me lessons that everyone should know. Now for social life.

I have grown into an introvert...... more on that later lol

But I was fortunate enough to go to school with most of my high school friends and have a group among the sea of clones. I kid you not 1 in 2 students were probably in a frat or sorority. I am not hating on them but the breed at the college I go to exemplifies terror of what human clones can look and do. Needless to say I prefer diversity. I am glad there was a cultural club I joined where I got to meet really cool upperclassmen, play intramural and eat a ton of food with. In terms of my career goals, I joined a pre-med club and started doing research in an immunology lab. I also got to shadow an OBGYN and I touched a BOOB! Then Ms.Corona hit and I spent about a quarter of freshman year in quarantine. Before this pandemic, I wanted to touch on a fucked up note about the racist, elitist, patriotic student section at football games. I understand how the football life/ culture/ cult is important to people but some like me and probably 20% of students want to sit and enjoy the game and cheer to ourselves. Instead, my first college football game was me and my friends of color getting yelled at because we were not acting cult like in the student section. But as freedom is defined, we can say, do or speak whatever we want and we paid the same amount for the tickets. I probably will not go again for a bit because it is not my scene. Instead of I will sell my tickets to Caucasians at a ridiculous price (lol i have already done it twice) so that they can enjoy their ritual.

Overall, I am content that I am here and gaining opportunities that I would not have gotten somewhere else, but there are still a long list of things I would change.
